Should I Add Lime to Compost
There are a few people that say to add lime to compost. Then there are some that say never do it. Is adding lime necessary? does it help or does it hurt. The quick answer is usually no, don’t add lime to your compost. However, like everything in life it depends.
First, let’s determine what lime does. Lime is commonly made from calcium or magnesium that is ground into powder. In some cases the lime is based from oyster shells or other similar products. Lime will increase the PH of your soil. The key to healthy soil is Alkaline and Acidic balance. An increase of PH is an increase in alkaline. Generally, a compost pile is high in alkaline – so usually lime is not necessary. We have learned that optimal composting is achieved when we have the right balance of everything, which includes a balance of alkaline and acidic composition. If your compost pile is acidic then it might be helpful to add a little lime.
Bottom line about lime in compost…..
Adding lime to a compost may slow decomposition. Before you add lime test your pile, test your soil, and determine if lime is necessary. Often times, it is cheaper and more effective to add the lime directly to your soil rather than your compost pile.
Do you add lime or avoid it?
